I think this sermon has four points. Mercy is a scandal; mercy is a gift, mercy is a way of thinking. Do not delay mercy. This month the boiler at home was broke. It had problems most of the spring. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. We could fix it temporarily but then the light would look strange, and it would need another temporary fix. But one day it just stopped working completely. But after the boiler broke the last time, I found it's wasn't so hard to live without it. Just boil water in the morning to shave, and boil water in the evening to take a shower. In the spring the apartment doesn't need heat. So I suppose living without a boiler-----one person would say, fix it now, but another person might wait. This sermon is about fixing what is broken. Three facts are at Mk 3:2-----one is the law of Moses----Mk 3:2 … . they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Mk 3:2 … . on the Sabbath. The law of Moses gave the Sabbath------Exod 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. The second fact at Mk 3:2 is Jesus. And the third fact are the accusers-----Mk 3:2 Some of them… ..When something is broken. most people say fix it now---- don't wait. Now this day in the synagogue both Jesus and his accusers agree the Law of Moses is perfect: Exod 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. But the second question----- Is Jesus broken? Mk 3:2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus,… .Jesus reputation; He heals people, he breaks the Sabbath. Exod 20:9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. So if we are looking for what is broken on this triangle-----one corner is the law of Moses, the second corner Jesus, the third corner are his accusers----Mk 3:2 Some of them; and if the accusers understand one thing---- they are perfect, the law of Moses is perfect------so Jesus must be broken. What the accusers think they have is a perfect day.
