Abū Ḥanīfah (699–767 CE) was a Muslim scholar, jurist, theologian, ascetic, and the founder of the Hanafi school of Sunni jurisprudence, which remains the most widely practiced to this day. His school predominates in Central and South Asia, Turkey, the Balkans, Russia, and some parts of the Arab world.

He was born in Kufa, Iraq, and belonged to the mawālī, the non-Arab Muslims, who pioneered intellectual activity in Islamic lands. He was known for his humility, respect, care, intellect, and for having considerable love for his community and his students.

Imam Abu Hanifa was a great scholar of hadith and fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). He was also a renowned ascetic and was known for his piety and devotion to Allah. He is considered to be one of the greatest mujtahids (independent jurists) in Islamic history.

The Hanafi school of jurisprudence is one of the four major Sunni schools of jurisprudence. It is characterized by its emphasis on ijtihad (independent reasoning) and its reliance on the Quran and Sunnah (the teachings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad).

Imam Abu Hanifa's contributions to Islamic jurisprudence are still relevant today. His emphasis on ijtihad and his reliance on the Quran and Sunnah have helped to shape the Islamic legal tradition.
