Aedan Cousland has been promoted to the rank of Warden-Commander in Ferelden by the Grey Wardens of Weisshaupt, after he and his allies ended the Fifth Blight with the defeat of the Archdemon on the towers of Fort Drakon in Denerim. His primary task, now that the Blight is defeated, is to find new recruits to rebuild the vastly depleted Grey Wardens of Ferelden.
In recognition of their aid to Ferelden in its hour of need, the Grey Wardens have been awarded the Arling of Amaranthine, which once belonged to the traitor Arl Rendon Howe, who was disgraced and personally executed by Warden-Commander Cousland for his crimes against Ferelden in general, and against the Couslands and the Arling of Highever in particular. As such, the new headquarters for the Ferelden Grey Wardens now resides at the old Alamarri fortress of Vigil's Keep, not too far inland from the port city of Amaranthine. Because Amaranthine now is under the Wardens' jurisdiction, Aedan Cousland, as Warden-Commander, is now also the new Arl of Amaranthine.

Aedan is headstrong but chivalrous. He is usually thoughtful in his actions, and tries to do deeds for the benefit of the greater good. However when provoked into anger, he doesn't back down from a fight, and may at times become hasty in his judgment when enraged. It is always something he must guard against.
