Calcium is a nutrient that helps keep our bones stronger & teeth healthier. Apart from this it also plays an important role in keeping our heart healthy, builds our muscles & keeps our nervous system functioning well.
Calcium requirements for each baby will be different. Doctors usually suggest supplements for babies who are pre-term & those who are underweight. For others, breast milking exclusively for the first 6 months should be enough to ensure the baby does not get vitamin deficiency.
Dairy products like milk, yogurt, paneer, cheese & ghee are great sources of Calcium.
Almonds are the safest nuts for babies that boost brain development, weight gain & increasing immunity as well. Of all the nuts, almonds have the highest levels of calcium and can be made into powder and mixed in milk or porridge.
Soy Milk is the best substitute for babies who are lactose intolerant. It is a very good calcium source rich in protein and Vitamin D.
These are very high in calcium and protein sources. Almost all pulses & lentils can be given to babies as early as 6 months, and are easily digestible by them.
You can give Amaranth to babies as early as 8 months old and it is rich in proteins and vitamin D.
Ragi is one of those superfoods that you can never go wrong with. Sprouted ragi contains 20% higher calcium and is also a good source of iron.
Oranges are rich in calcium and vitamin C. Each orange consists around 50 mg of calcium and can be given to baby as a breakfast juice.
Just one cup of spinach provides 220 mg of calcium. Even though the body cannot absorb it completely due to the oxalic acid present in it but even then it is one of the highest sources of calcium.
You can feed your baby dry and fresh figs as early as 6 months. One fig contains around 15 mg of calcium which makes it a good addition to your baby’s diet plan.
For babies who don’t like diary products, tofu is a great substitute. It contains 350 mg of calcium and can be made by simply replacing panner in the recipes.
