Gakushuin University is a relatively small private university
located in the central area of Tokyo, known mainly for a number of its
famous alumni and its beautiful campus. It, therefore, came as a big
surprise when Nature reported in 2018 that the university was the
top-ranking academic institution in Japan when assessed on the quality
of its research in the natural sciences.

The present film intends to convey the research atmosphere in the
physics department by focusing on some of its members including, in
particular, Takuya Hirano whose group has been producing remarkable
and reliable results in a variety of topics in quantum optics and
quantum information technology, such as the continuous-variable
quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), the Bose-Einstein condensation
(BEC) of atoms with spin degrees of freedom, and quantum squeezing of
light.
