ABOUT CATARACT & GLAUCOMA
A cataract is an eye condition where the natural lens becomes cloudy, usually because of aging and it can only be treated by surgery.
Glaucoma is an eye condition where a patient's eye pressure increases abnormally and starts damaging the optic nerve which eventually results in gradual loss of vision.
While Cataracts can only be treated by surgery, Glaucoma is primarily controlled by Eye drops.
In advanced cases of Glaucoma where eye drops are not able to control the eye pressure, surgery may be required.
ABOUT PATIENT
The patient's name is Mr. Ameeruddin. He is 61 years old and he is from Gaya, Bihar.
The patient was suffering from both Cataract & Glaucoma in one of his eyes. His Glaucoma condition was at an advanced stage where his eye pressure was not been maintained by eye drops.
ABOUT TRABECULECTOMY SURGERY FOR GLAUCOMA TREATMENT
Trabeculectomy is a type of glaucoma surgery performed on the eye that creates a new pathway for fluid inside the eye to be drained.
When performing a trabeculectomy, an eye surgeon creates a flap in the sclera — the white part of the eye — underneath the upper eyelid. Underneath this flap, a pathway is created to allow fluid to drain, which lowers eye pressure. The flap is then placed loosely back down against the sclera to protect the drainage pathway, and the entire surgery site is covered up using the outermost covering of the eye (the conjunctiva).
ABOUT PHACOEMULSIFICATION CATARACT SURGERY
Phacoemulsification is the most common cataract surgery technique performed.
During phacoemulsification, a surgeon makes a small incision at the edge of the cornea and then creates an opening in the membrane that surrounds the lens. A small ultrasonic probe is then inserted, breaking up the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The instrument vibrates at ultrasonic speed to chop and almost dissolve the lens material into tiny fragments. The fragments are then suctioned out of the capsule by an attachment on the probe tip.
After the lens particles are removed, an intraocular lens implant, commonly referred to as an IOL, is implanted and positioned into the lens's natural capsule. It is inserted through the tiny corneal incision through a hollowed-out tube. Once the lens is pushed through, it unfolds and is positioned in place.
