Dutch Masters Re-viewed (Hollandse Meesters Her-zien) – a growing exhibition portraying dark-skinned people in Holland in the 17th and 18th century
They are almost invisible, the dark skinned people that lived in Holland in the 17th and 18th century. The paintings of the famous Dutch Masters feature mostly white protagonists. The odd black person is a subsidiary figure, there to illustrate the wealth of the white main figure. One would almost draw the conclusion that dark skinned people simply weren’t present in that era. But dark skinned people aren’t newcomers. They have walked the streets of Amsterdam for centuries. With the growing exhibition Dutch Masters Re-viewed, curator Jörgen Tjon A Fong wants to set the record a little bit straighter and put a face to the names of people we know where present in Holland around that time. Different photographers portray prominent Dutch people of colour, who each adopt the identity of one of eleven chosen historical figures, in the style of Rembrandt and his peers.
Dutch Masters re-viewed is created in collaboration with Amsterdam Museum. The first three portraits were revealed at museum OSCAM in October.
