Howard Hodgkin is a British painter known for his abstractions deeply rooted in the tradition of figurative easel painting. He is best known for his construction of pictorial space using expressive brush marks and rich colors, almost always painting on the back of old frames, creating a tension between the painted frame and its surface. “It's just not possible to control a large painting by its edge like you can with a small canvas,” he explains. Born on August 6, 1932 in London, England, Hodgkin and his family fled the war between 1940 and 1943 and settled in Long Island, New York. He then studied the paintings of Stuart Davis, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso at the MoMA in New York, which influenced his work and his explorations on painting. In 1984, he represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale and won the Turner Prize in 1985.
