A judge has sentenced Tracey Nix, a 67-year-old grandmother from Hardee County, to five years in prison after death of Nix’s 7-month-old granddaughter, Uriel Schock, who died after being left in a hot car in November 2022.

Nix, who was acquitted of manslaughter charges, was convicted of the lesser charge of leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.

The tragedy occurred when Nix left Uriel in her car after returning from lunch with friends.

Temperatures reached 90°F that day, and the infant succumbed to hyperthermia.

The incident marked the second grandchild to die under Nix’s care; her grandson Ezra drowned in 2021, though no charges were filed in that case.

Uriel’s parents both testified at the sentencing.

Uriel’s father, Drew Schock said his mother and law had taken the loves of his life from him. He said he could not get into his own vehicle without thinking about his daughter – and how she suffered that day.

"But I can't image - but I have to because she did – how she sat there and suffered. And screamed and flailed," he said

Uriel’s mother, Kaila wept openly in court.

She spoke about the emotional turmoil she and her family have suffered– first the losses – then seeking justice for Uriel, while also realizing it’s her own mother facing prison time.

“It isn't about what I'm feeling. It's about what I know,” Kaila told the judge. “And I know that my son drowned on a very cold day in their pond, and he drowned alone. And I know that my daughter died on a scorching hot afternoon alone.”

Kaila Nix also turned to speak directly to her mother several times while speaking.

“I do put forth the request that you honor my children's deaths when you consider the sentencing,” she said to the judge before turning to face Tracey Nix. “And I love you. That has not changed. And I appreciate if you would look at me, thank you… I'm still your daughter. I'm still your daughter. And nothing is changing any of this. I still love you. I hate – hate that I have to choose. But you know I had to. And it doesn't change my heart.”
