Frames: Being Black In The Netherlands

Although the Netherlands may appear tolerant and open, traditions like Zwarte Piet suggest that racial discrimination and stereotyping are still prevalent issues. The lack of self-awareness of the Netherlands and the Dutch regarding their covert racism and colonial past act as a mask to the injustices faced by their Black citizens. This video is an attempt at exposing some of these biases by creating a platform for individuals of colour to speak openly and freely and share their experiences. Michael Brookman-Aikins, Naomi Dimeo, Ayisha Heuerding and Noah Sandel discuss the subjects of housing discrimination, social media activism and lack of diversity in universities.

During the editing of this video, murals at the Black Archives in Amsterdam were defaced. Images of Black activists were painted over to look white. Racism is alive and well in Amsterdam.
