Ikarus C80.30A | OMSI 2

The Ikarus 280 is the most successful urban-suburban articulated bus of the Ikarus Karosseria- and Jármugyár and is used worldwide. It did test runs in Budapest in December 1971, and was officially presented in 1972, and serial production began the following year, in 1973 - at the same time as the suspension of the Ikarus 180 - and lasted until 2002. In the 1970s and 1980s, this type accounted for two-thirds of the world's articulated bus production. A total of 60,993 280 buses rolled out of the Ikarus factories in Mátyásföld and Székesfehérvár. Its success is indicated by the fact that many countries around the world bought it, among others it was put on sale in the Soviet Union, Poland, Turkey, Czechoslovakia, but it also reached China, Venezuela, Tunisia, Iran and Tanzania.

About half of the buses were sold to the Soviet Union, every Volán company in Hungary had a smaller or larger number of them, and the biggest buyer was the BKV, which bought 1,680 new buses between 1973 and 1992, and another 17 used ones from Miskolc in 2002.

The design, which differed from the customs of the time, the abandonment of the curved roof, or the opening windows, which were considered huge at the time, contributed significantly to its success, and the fact that the bus was able to meet many technical requirements according to the customer's request. The work of the drivers was made easier by the hydraulic power steering and the automatic transmission, but they were also made with a manual gearbox (especially in the long-distance version), while from the operator's point of view, cheaper servicing was an advantage. Thanks to its self-aligning, i.e. forced-steering "C" axis, it can turn on the same curve as its solo version, the Ikarus 260, which is also produced in large numbers.
