Vintage Jeeps Explore the Black Rock Desert (circa 1972)

A few years after the Sierra Treasure Hunters 4wd Club was formed in 1963, they headed to Nevada’s High Rock Desert to follow the tracks of the pioneers on the infamous Applegate-Lassen Emigrant Trail. It became known as “The Death Trail” after dozens of wagon trains chose it instead of crossing the 40-mile desert. In the heat of summer there was limited water, and grass for livestock was gone after the first few groups passed. Later groups, realizing they were in peril, were too far along to turn back and continued on as their livestock and perished from dehydration.

In period-correct clothing and rifles at-hand, the Treasure Hunters recrossed the infamous Death Trail in the early 1970s, but in Jeeps rather than wagons, and have allowed us to share their adventure with you. You might find a Jeep CJ-5, CJ-6, maybe a Scrambler or Wagoneer, and other relics of bygone years. Enjoy!
