Описание к видео Two Kodiak Bears Challenge Us Together: Scary Bear Encounter

The large male brown bear trailing the two younger females was never really interested in us. When these bears turned toward us, I believe the female was either curious or trying to use us to peel off the male from behind her. I have never in a decade of guiding bear safaris ever seen bears act like this. It just goes to show you that even an experienced guide like myself hasn't seen it all. This behavior is very strange, and to this day, it is quite interesting to me. I was initially not even sure that the trailing bear was a male because if it was a male, I never saw genitalia of any kind. It is possible that the trailing bear was a large female running off her cub, but I believe it is more likely that it is a not fully developed male who was coming into his sexual prime and was chasing females. If that is the case, He relentlessly pursued the smaller female. The smaller blonde female bear chased off a multitude of other bears in the meadow and even attacked one small subadult in an attempt to run it out of the meadow. This behavior indicated to me at the time that this bear was not a bear you take a chance getting close to. I fully believe that in situations like this one, inexperienced individuals are at a greatly increased risk of being attacked. It was only due to many other experiences dealing with curious and aggressive bears that I stayed as calm as I was. I am never comfortable around bears who act as this one did, but the knowledge that if my bear spray fails to deploy or does not work, I still have my voice and my firearm makes it much easier to act rationally. For those of you wondering how you should go about defending yourself from a bear, this is a complex subject, and I don't want to get into it in the description of this video; however, in Alaska, where we operate and guide, I have a four-step protocol. The first step is to read the situation and determine to the best of your ability whether the approaching bear is curious, fearful, or in prey drive. The distinguishing differences between these behavioral driving forces are very important. Typically a fearful bear only wants you to leave; thus, backing away is a good option. A curious bear on the other hand, should be dealt with by standing your ground, yelling, and preparing to use bear spray. It is never okay to let a curious bear get close; curiosity and prey drive are to easily gone between. With a bear-in prey drive, you must decide whether you will attempt to use bear spray or resort to lethal force as your initial countermeasure. The four-step process I use goes roughly like this. 1 Determine motivation 2 Determine minimal effective deterrent 3 Test minimal effective deterrent 4 escalate/deescalate based on reaction and outcome. Alaska is an intense place where a lot can go wrong, especially on Kodiak, or the coastal regions like this one, where bears roam the meadows in the spring and are hungry. Take precautions and/or a professional guide when looking to see Kodiak bears, brown bears or inland grizzlies if you don't have the experience to keep yourself safe. Plus on a trip like this one, you can photograph and film while your guide handles the hard parts, which is WAY better than the alternative!
