Potassium is a major concern for kidney failure patients. This video will help kidney failure patients to choose low-potassium fruits. In kidney failure patients, their kidney is unable to excrete the potassium from their body.
Why is Potassium Dangerous for Kidney Failure Patients?
Potassium is one of the vital components of the human body. It helps regulate the balancing of fluids, nerve transmissions, and muscular contractions. It must be advised to take the appropriate amount of potassium to keep your kidneys healthy. Our kidneys might not be able to eliminate excess potassium. Therefore, we have to limit the potassium intake and keep it 2,000 mg per day. You have to eat fruits & vegetables with low potassium. A high potassium level can lead to a heart attack or irregular heartbeat.
• Fruits that a kidney patient should avoid eating.
Fruits contain large amounts of potassium, so they should be intake in limited amounts only. In addition, choosing the right fruit helps you to control your level of potassium.
Kidney patients should not eat high potassium fruits. They should avoid bananas, kiwi, dry fruits, coconut, avocados, etc. These fruits are high in potassium, so these fruits are not beneficial for kidney patients. Citrus fruits are also harmful to kidney patients like oranges, mangoes, melons, etc.
• Fruits a kidney patient can eat.
A kidney disease patient should limit potassium to 2000mg per day. In addition, the patient should eat low potassium fruits like Apples, Guava (without seeds ), Pear, and Papaya.
If you are a kidney failure patient with diabetes, you should avoid eating fruits. You can eat salad like carrot, radish, and cucumber. This helps you to maintain your sugar level and provide essential vitamins & nutrients to your body, as well. This way, you can maintain your potassium level.
You can eat fruits with low potassium but with a serving size 1 Cup a day.
• Other foodstuffs that a kidney failure patient should avoid
Kidney failure patients should avoid eating jaggery and green leafy vegetables like Sarson ka saag. Jaggery is made up of sugarcane, which is a good source of potassium.
Kidney failure patients should avoid common salt or Tata Lite Salt as it has 15% artificial potassium chloride added. So, when you intake this Tata Lite Salt, it will enhance your potassium level.
Kidney failure patients should avoid intake of juices. Juices are also a great source of potassium. So, it is advised to avoid consuming juices for kidney failure patients.
