This is Joko Widodo's most ambitious project, moving Indonesia’s capital from Jakarta to a remote location 1,200 Kilometers from Java, to East Kalimantan on Borneo Island. Indonesia plans to move its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, and hold its Independence Day celebration in the new capital by August 17 next year, but with environmental and social concerns, plaguing construction. And just one year after Nusantara’s inauguration, will Indonesia’s new capital be ready?
Located in eastern Borneo, the world's third-largest island, Nusantara is set to replace Jakarta as Indonesia's political center by the summer of 2024.
It will sprawl across 256,000 hectares in East Kalimantan province on the Indonesian part of Borneo, an island the country shares with Malaysia and Brunei.
Government buildings and housing need to be constructed from scratch. Initial estimates were that over 1.5 million civil servants would be relocated to the city, though ministries and government agencies are still working to finalize that number.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has pitched a utopian vision of a green city, four times the size of Jakarta where residents would commute on electric buses.
The government will in September, start building housing for about 16,000 civil servants, military, and police officers, who are due to move in next year, according to the public works and housing minister.
The government plans to complete 12 of 47 apartment blocks by July next year, a month before it will hold its first Independence Day flag ceremony in the new capital.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has expressed optimism that his country will be able to celebrate next year's August 17 Independence Day celebration in the new capital, Nusantara.
Construction is underway to relocate the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to a site on Kalimantan Island about 2,000 kilometers away. The megacity of Jakarta has for years struggled with traffic congestion and air pollution.
