When the Pistons traded Kelly Tripucka for Adrian Dantley I’ll admit I was PISSED. I loved Tripucka and it was hard for me to understand how AD made us better. We started the season slowly (3-6) and I was getting more and more skeptical. But as the team started to gel and pick up some big wins I could see AD’s impact. Late in the 4th quarter and whenever the offense hit dry spots we could throw the ball to AD and he could get a bucket or get fouled.
When we swept Washington in the first round of the playoffs I was ESTASTIC!!! I was popping champagne! I was very worried about Atlanta because they beat us the year before. When we beat them that’s when I really started to believe! Going into the Eastern Conference to face Boston I was TERRIFIED! The ghost of that incredible ’86 team casted a very large shadow. I didn’t believe we had a chance, I was expecting to lose in 5 maybe 6. Started out down 0-2 I thought it was a wrap and get the brooms out. Then AD and our bench started to take over! AD lead us with 25 in game 5 and went to work on Bird and McHale for 32 in game 4 to even the series up.
When Parrish wasn’t ejected in Game 5 I knew the fix was in, I knew whoever won game 5 was probably going to win the series because I knew we weren’t going to lose in front of 60,000 people in the Silverdome and with those refs it was gonna be impossible to win game 7 at Boston! I’m still furious that Parrish wasn’t ejected in Game 5 for assaulting Laimbeer, he wasn’t even given a technical foul. How does a player get suspended for a game later but not get a technical foul nor an ejection in real time when the event actually happened!
That game 7 late in the 3rd quarter when AD dove to the floor for a loose ball and collided with Vinnie Johnson cemented my love for AD. That’s when I knew how much he really cared about winning and laying it all on the line! Even though we didn’t start the ’88-89 season well and it was apparent that Daly and AD weren’t getting along and AD wasn’t accepting the emergence of Dennis Rodman. I was devastated for AD when we traded him. I believed even with our hiccups we were going to win the ’89 NBA Championship and AD deserved that ring!
Now I don’t think we would have won in ’90, no way would Dantley agreed to come off the bench and allow Dennis Rodman to start. And we wouldn’t have won without Dennis starting. Aguirre was a better fit because he was going to accept a decreased role with the team that AD never would have.
