In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the environmental impact of the internet. Specifically, I dig into how the internet works through data centers and networks, both of which contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions through massive energy demand. In all, the internet does have a huge energy demand, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it has to create a lot of emissions. If the data centers and networks behind the internet instead rely on renewable energies then the internet can possibly be a positive environmental force.
