Croatia, Turkey and Greece could be removed from the UK’s safe travel list as cases continue to rise in the popular holiday destinations.

The government places countries on a watch list if they reach 20 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 people. Ministers will then decide on a country by country basis whether to remove them for the UK’s airbridge scheme.

At the weekend Croatia passed the government’s threshold for COVID-19 cases. Croatia now has over 29 COVID cases per 100,000 people and the virus is spreading. This compares to just 18 cases in the UK. Greece has over 21 cases per 100,000 people and Turkey stands at 18, meaning both countries could soon be at risk from being put onto the quarantine list of nations.

If the government decides a country is unsafe to travel to in terms of coronavirus cases, you must self-isolate for 14 days on return or face a £1000 fine. Last week France was removed from the UK’s safe list of nations, causing a rush of holiday makers to get home before the quarantine rules were implemented. Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands were all removed from the green list of countries after cases were seen to be too high.
