In February 2022, less than a year into my first role as a people manager, I faced a challenge I had no background to handle. Half of my small software team was based in Ukraine and now found themselves in the middle of a war.

I searched the internet for guidance, but found little practical advice. I wasn’t a senior HR administrator at a large multinational; I was just a team lead at a small software company. With limited authority and resources, how could I provide the best help and support for my team?

While I truly hope that no one else finds themself in this situation, I’d like to share my experience and the lessons I’ve learned, so they may help someone else through a difficult period.
