This weeks episode is footage that comes from a new tower for me, bringing my total tower count to 116!

The City of London boasts several rings of twelve: some extra boomy, some extra heavy, and some just pleasant to listen to. And yes, while this ring may not be the heaviest, it still has a grand old tenor and for my first time ringing them, it was quite a jovial experience! This ring that I'm talking about is the lighter ring of 12 at the Church of St Sepulchre-without-Newgate. This church holds an impressive title, being the largest Anglican parish church in the City of London! It is located just north of the Holborn Viaduct, with only a crossroads splitting the church from the Old Bailey. Many of the City churches have "without" in their name. This is because these churches were outside the medieval city walls, or "gates" as they are called in London. Therefore, this church having "without Newgate" in its name means that it was on the outside of the "New" gate. It was speculated that the Newgate of London was a post-Roman era structure, however, evidence has been found that doesn't support this claim. Due to that, many have suggested that Newgate is actually an evolution of Ludgate. Essentially, Ludgate became used less and less frequently so it is believed that they renamed the area to Newgate instead.

Pre-1984, St Sepulchre (commonly known as "seps") was a ring of 10, cast between 1739 and 1830 by both Thomas Mears and Samuel Knight. The latter being known for casting the majority of the present day bells of Southwark Cathedral! In 1984 (a decade when Whitechapel were at one of their bell casting peaks) Whitehcapel Bell Foundry recast the 4th of the ring of 10, and also added two trebles. This made the ring of 12 we have today.

This footage was taken on 24/3/22 on the monthly Surrey Association of Church Bell Ringers (SACBR) Advanced 12 Bell Practice. Normally, this practice is held at South Croydon, however we had an "away day" this month. Highlights of this practice included Bristol, Yorkshire and Cambridge Surprise Maximus, Cambridge Royal, and 2 lots of Stedman Cinques. Claps to Phil on your touches! In this video, we see me covering to the second touch of Stedman. The whole piece was roughly 6 and a half minutes long, however the video turned out to be upside down. Luckily, I was able to convert 3 minutes of it to the right-way-round!
