Today's Gospel Reading: Luke 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd asked Jesus to tell his brother to share their inheritance. Jesus replied, “Who made me your judge or arbitrator?” Then he warned everyone to be on guard against greed, saying that life isn’t about having lots of possessions.

He then told a story about a rich man whose land produced a huge harvest. The man thought to himself, “What should I do? I have no place to store all my crops.” He decided to tear down his barns and build bigger ones to store everything. He then said to himself, “Now I can relax and enjoy life, since I have so much saved up.”

But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be taken from you. Who will get all the things you have stored up?” This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasures for themselves but isn’t rich in what truly matters to God.

This passage highlights the importance of prioritizing spiritual wealth over material possessions. Jesus addresses a concern about inheritance but redirects the focus to the dangers of greed. The parable of the rich man illustrates how earthly treasures are temporary and ultimately meaningless in the face of mortality. True fulfillment comes from being “rich in what matters to God,” which emphasizes generosity, relationships, and a focus on spiritual values rather than hoarding wealth. It's a powerful reminder to seek what truly lasts and to consider how we invest our lives and resources.
