Описание к видео Defenders of Dynatron City (NES) Playthrough

A playthrough of JVC's 1992 action game for the NES, Defenders of Dynatron City.

Defenders of Dynatron City for the NES seemingly had all the makings of a huge hit. It was the centerpiece of a LucasArts multimedia venture, with production headed by Gary Winnick (co-creator of    • Maniac Mansion (NES) Playthrough   ), and the game was backed by two support projects: a Marvel comic from Steve Purcell (the creator of    • Sam & Max Hit the Road (PC) Playthrough - ...   ) that ran for six issues, and an animated TV pilot featuring the voice talents of Tim Curry, Whoopi Goldberg, and Gary Owens, among others.

With that much talent and money being thrown at the project, it's not hard to imagine the confidence George and friends had in their fledgling franchise, and if you're wondering why you've never heard of Defenders of Dynatron City, the answer is simple: it flopped. Hard. The show was never picked up by a network, and the game became one of the highest profile bombs the NES had seen in quite some time. The gaming press had a field day tearing it apart.

The Defenders of Dynatron City are a crew of six who were turned into freaks of nature after being subjected to an experiment by Dr. Mayhem. They now aim to take down the mad doctor as he unleashes an army of his creations on Dynatron City in an attempt to take over. The game begins on the city streets, where they'll have to fight several waves of berserk robots before taking on Dr. Mayhem's war blimp. They then head to the mall, the sewers, and the Proto Cola factory to wipe out more baddies before finally facing off against their creator.

The art direction is excellent, the characters are fun encapsulations of 90s TV weirdness, and the story had potential. Unfortunately, the controls are laggy, the hit detection is broken, the enemy AI is both relentless and braindead, the stage designs run out of gas before the halfway point, and the soundtrack is a nerve-shattering collection of shrill PSG tones that's made only slightly less irritating by the constant barrage of loud zapping and explosion sounds. (Nothing against Dave Warhol and George Sanger - I loved their music in Maniac Mansion and    • The Adventures of Rad Gravity (NES) Playth...   - but this soundtrack is violence against the ears.) The game has plenty of style, but not nearly enough to save it from its shortcomings.

I wanted to love Defenders of Dynatron City, but I found myself struggling to like it, and that sucks. If the core game had received the same amount of love and attention as the concept had, things might've turned out very differently.
