On April 10, 2008, Meghan Landowski, a 16-year-old from Portsmouth, Virginia, was found brutally murdered in her home. After returning from school, Meghan left a voicemail for her mother before starting lunch. Later, her stepfather, Chris Short, discovered her lifeless body with multiple stab wounds. The investigation revealed signs of sexual assault and extreme violence, suggesting the killer was someone she knew.

Initially, Robert Hickey, a former family acquaintance, was suspected, but DNA evidence ruled him out. The investigation then focused on 17-year-old Robert Lee Barnes, a classmate of Meghan's. Barnes, who had once shown interest in Meghan, became a prime suspect when his DNA matched the crime scene evidence. After an odd refusal to provide a DNA sample and suspicious behavior, Barnes was arrested and confessed to the crime.
