Having already undergone more experimental endeavours using 22EDO, I decided that I wanted to delve into this temperament in the context of a more accessible musical language. Beyond Between explores extended harmonies in 22EDO using relatively traditional composition techniques. The harmonies were written giving careful consideration to voice leading, focusing on the use of microtonal (in particular quarter-tone - 55 cents in 22EDO) displacements to accentuate the innate qualities of 22EDO. To give a sense of the harmonic nuances that become possible in microtonal tunings, there are 324 9th chords that can be constructed on top of any one root in 22EDO. This piece explores just a handful of such extended harmonies, making use of each of 22EDO's four thirds (approximated to the harmonic ratios 7/6, 6/5, 5/4 and 9/7), as well as other characteristic intervals in 22EDO, such as its relatively close approximations of the 7th and 11th harmonics in the harmonic series.
