I wish there was a special sauce or process you can use to clean pistons quickly and easily at home, but I haven't found one that's quick and inexpensive that won't damage the piston. I prefer to use a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone and an ultra-fine ScotchBrite pad to clean the piston and a broken piston ring to clean the ring lands. Once that's done, I go into the process I use to inspect the pistons and connecting rods.
