Is Rogue Legacy 2 Worth It?

With a lot more of everything, Rogue Legacy 2 goes above and beyond what you can expect from a sequel. Although we don’t quite have our full review ready yet, in the meantime here are the top five biggest additions to Rogue Legacy 2:

1. Visuals

The most obvious change is the visuals. Gone are the pixels and in is the 2.5D heavy shaded animations with hand drawn backdrops that make the world feel alive. Purists fear not because RL2 still manages to retain the look and feel of the original.

 2. Classes

Most roguelikes have 1 character. Rogue Legacy had 9. Rogue Legacy 2 has 15 different classes and somehow they all feel very different. My favourite new class so far is easily the chef. They may only have a cast iron skillet for a weapon but they are always ready to cook meaning you do fire damage and you can hit projectiles back.

3. Metroidvania Elements

Rogue Legacy 2 takes a step in the Metroidvania direction with the introduction of heirlooms, which can be found by completing micro dungeons. Heirlooms are permanent unlocks that grant your character special abilities and skills allowing you to access new areas and information that can aid your journey.

4. Relics

One of the biggest changes from the first game is the introduction of relics, which are run based items that can greatly increase some of your stats and aren’t as hard to obtain as heirlooms. The right relics could drastically change a run.

5. Traits 2.0

Traits are back but have been refined to offer a risk/reward scenario. Rather than easily deciding to avoid a trait, the decision becomes tougher because of the incentives they can offer. Since the different classes are balanced very well, when it comes to deciding which heir to take, it usually boils down to best traits or least worst.
