Typhoon Shanshan brings heavy rain and traffic disruptions to southwestern Japan. A powerful typhoon is approaching Japan's southwestern islands on Tuesday, with weather officials urging residents to be cautious of heavy rain and strong winds expected in the area over the next few days. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon Shanshan was located about 130 kilometers east of Amami Oshima on Tuesday morning and was slowly moving north toward Kyushu. So far, no damage has been reported from the typhoon, but people are preparing for heavy rain and strong winds that the typhoon will bring. JR companies that operate bullet trains announced that services could be suspended over a wide area of Kyushu and Honshu from Wednesday through Sunday. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, up to 400mm of rain is expected in the next 24 hours on Amami Oshima, while up to 500mm is expected in the Kyushu region from Wednesday to Thursday. Fishermen in the Kyushu region tied up their boats at port facilities on Monday in preparation for the typhoon.
