While many musical acts were willing to play ball with Ed Sullivan in order to appear on his show, there were others that weren’t so keen on compromising their integrity in order to fit in with Ed’s conservative values. The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and the Jackson 5 are examples of musical acts that fit right in on Ed Sullivan’s program, while the Doors, Bob Dylan, and Buddy Holly represent a handful of the musical acts that caught the conservative host’s wrath.

The Doors were asked to change a song lyric. Though they claimed to accept the request, singer Jim Morrison decided to sing the song’s original, unchanged lyric once the cameras were rolling.
