Atlantis was a prime example of the ideal city state that Socrates' envisioned in Plato's writings. The example and supposed memory of Atlantis was pulled from the distant past. so distant that it would have been forgotten, if not for the priests of Egypt who managed to keep the record of it for thousands of years. But that still doesn't answer the question of whether Atlantis was real or just a literary device. It's important to keep in mind that Plato is relating these things through a dialogue, In the dialogue he admits that it is wise to rule the people of a city under a "divine lie," for the purpose of civil order. Does that mean that Atlantis is made up? Not necessarily.
