I have been teaching myself to play the organ. This is a Nord C2D model. As I begin each new piece it seems to me that I will never be able to learn the work. BWV 572 I love this piece, that is a prerequisite to endeavoring to learn something that is really out of my league. It's not perfect, but if I don't record what I am working on, and I begin a new piece then I tend to lose it and have to put in more time to regain it. Anyway, playing the organ has helped me keep my sanity during the pandemic and kept me away from the "drink". I lose my ability to coordinate hands and feet if I have even a little alcohol. I believe that learning a piece on the organ (with pedals) has really opened my eyes to what it means to "learn" a work. You really can't just get by by reading (at my level). It's one hand alone, the other hand alone, pedal alone, 2 hands, one hand and pedal, the other hand and pedal, dotted figures, the opposite etc. If I applied this level of learning to the bassoon (I am a professional bassoonist) maybe I'd of had a better career, lol. My piano playing has even benefited from this rigorous standard. During the fall I learned all of Brahms op 76. I recently started to the learn Prokofiev Sonata 7 and the "great" fugue in g minor. What I'd most like is to take lessons. But with the pandemic ,and here in Mexico City I am not really convinced enough about the organists that I know here to ask them for lessons. As far as I know there are few "classical" Nord C2D uploads on Youtube. I opted for it because it had a pedal board and at the time couldn't imagine how I'd get ahold of one. And I am glad. There's no fussing around with computers which takes time away from practicing (Hauptwerk is incredible). Hauptwerk is definitely in the future. I recently bought an focusrite audio interface. I just have to bite the bullet and acquire a subscription. And why do I do this? well, I love the music, and I love the challenge of it. It takes all of my coordination and a ton of patience. Perhaps it'd be more useful to dedicate all the hours I spend at the keyboard to studying the stock market, buying and selling (a dangerous business). Who knows? Keyboards work for me. And I am a firm believer that living is not a spectator sport. Don't watch tennis, play tennis. It's better to play music than to listen to music. Of course acquiring the necessary skill to kick a ball, and dribble take years, but then there's a challenge. That's not to say that I am not enjoying the Euro Cup, but it's an idea. So, so what if it takes me a month to learn something? The pandemic has made having a month of time for an economically useless endeavor like me playing this Fantasia possible. Normally it'd be the 12 services a week. No time left over for more music. Just want to rest and make reeds. Retirement is on the horizon.
