STORYLINE:
Farmers, Indigenous organizations, and transport unions protesting Tuesday clashed with police outside Tabacundo in Ecuador, after blocking a road leading to the city.

Protesters are demanding that the government reinstate subsidies for diesel, the primary fuel for heavy machinery used in their daily tasks.

After the subsidies that had been in place since 1974 were eliminated on September 17, the fuel's price almost tripled, topping out at 0.48 dollars per gallon.

Tuesday marks the second day of nationwide protests, and organizations protesting expect more people to join their cause.

Col. Edgardo Moreno Suarez, regional Commander of the Ecuadorian National Police in Tabacundo, said officers dispersed the protesters "progressively using force," to clear the road until they fired tear gas and arrested at least one of the demonstrators.
