Will.I.Am On His Latest Solo Music Project, Deep LA Roots and Giving Back to His Community

One of the most innovative artists of our time joins Brown Bag Mornings- Will.i.am! In this exclusive interview, the Grammy-winning artist talks about growing up in LA, giving back to his community, and his current music partnerships with Formula 1 and Lil’ Wayne.

Will.i.am shares the story of his early DJ career success and how it helped create his foundation focused on sending teens to college. Though not too passionate about DJing, he talks about the inspiration he gained from LA freestyle music, even sampling songs he heard at quinceañeras on his first solo project, “All About Girls.”

The head of the iconic Black Eyed Peas opened up about the disappointment over his first solo album not performing to his liking and how it inspired him to write “The E.N.D.” and hop on the dance music craze for another successful album for the BEP.

The self-proclaimed “Blaxican” reminisced about his performance at the East LA Classic, claiming it was once his dream before becoming famous. When discussing the drones at his performance, Will.i.am shared he got inspiration from robotics programs and computer science around the world, and eventually brought these programs to Los Angeles neighborhoods with his own schools to inspire his community.

While passionately talking about growing up in LA and his family's deep roots in the community, Will.i.am discussed the conflicting feelings about the arts district and other city additions, knowing that they often mean the gentrification of his community.

Will.i.am shared stories about sitting next to Joan Sebastian at a Lucha Libre event, his admiration for Mexican Businessman Carlos Slim, and plugged in his new artificial intelligence company called FYI.AI.
