We’re heading to London Zoo to ask one of the biggest questions about wildlife in captivity: why should zoos exist at all?

In this episode, I spend time with the Humboldt penguins — some of the most popular animals in zoos — to understand why they’re here, what their lives look like in captivity, and what that says about the purpose of zoos today. Are zoos really helping conservation, or are they just entertainment behind glass?

I’ll be drawing the penguins as I explore their story, speaking with keepers, and wrestling with the dilemma of captivity, conservation, and care. What can penguins in zoos reveal about our relationship with animals, and how do they challenge the way we think about saving species?

Lee Putman is a visual Artist based in London who creates work that explores the beauty of animals while questioning the ethics of our relationships with them. Facts and Fine Liners is a way to encourage an audience to engage with difficult topics and allow themselves to be challenged using Lee as an example of how this can be done.
Lee uses the mediums of image making and story telling create a narrative that asks tough questions in a way that is cathartic and satisfies our curiosities.
