Fishing Around Alaska | Starfish, Cod, & More Sockeye Salmon | Kenai River & Homer Spit 2023

We had an absolute BLAST on this fishing tour of the Kenai Peninsula in mid-August 2023.

After a quick ultrasound to check in on Baby Leonard at 22 weeks, we headed south to the Kenai River out of Soldotna Alaska for more sockeye salmon. After an overnight there, we fished some more in the morning to bring in 3 salmon (*cough* all Becca's *cough*).

Then we went even further south to the Homer Spit. This is a natural 3-mile-long peninsula into the Kachemak Bay and is a must-see if you're going to be on the Kenai!

At Land's End of the Homer Spit, we did some shore fishing and caught tons of Pacific Cod, a small Flounder, and a STARFISH! Becca is still very excited about the starfish. Most were sent back into the ocean, but we did keep a few cod for some fish n chips later on.

After a great afternoon on the salty ocean, we headed back North to try out some more sockeye salmon. The run was still getting about 40,000 salmon per day, so we figured we should try and bring home as many as we could while we were in the area.

Levi caught us one more sockeye salmon before we went to bed in the back of the truck for the second night and then headed home bright and early in the morning.

Levi also taught Becca how to do some filleting on the cod at the local fish cleaning station, and we prepared everything for easy processing back home.

After the long drive home, we processed the fish in multiple ways, including a few different canning recipes and some frozen to be eaten sooner! We highly recommend these fishing trips to anyone looking to fish the Kenai Peninsula. We will definitely be back at it again next summer.
