Florence Beatrice Price (1887–1953) was an American composer, pianist, organist, and educator whose music reshaped the landscape of classical music in the United States. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and trained at the New England Conservatory, Price blended European symphonic forms with African American spirituals, rhythms, and musical traditions to create a distinctly American voice.

In 1933, her Symphony in E minor was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, making her the first African-American woman to have a symphonic work played by a major U.S. orchestra. A central figure of the Chicago Black Renaissance, she composed over 300 works, including four symphonies, concertos, chamber music, art songs, piano works, and spiritual arrangements.

Despite facing systemic barriers of race and gender, Price persisted—supporting her family through teaching, performing, and composing—and collaborated with leading artists such as Margaret Bonds, Marian Anderson, and Langston Hughes. Long overlooked after her death, her legacy has been powerfully revived following the 2009 rediscovery of many lost manuscripts, leading to widespread performances, recordings, and scholarly recognition.

Today, Florence Price is celebrated as a pioneer of American classical music, whose work expanded the canon and continues to inspire performers, composers, and audiences worldwide.
