Hey there, it’s Mike and Ira, the Diamond Pros. Are you someone who generally goes against the grain and likes to be unique? Well this video is for you - we’re going to be talking about fancy yellow diamonds.

Most people are used to the typical scale of diamond color from D to Z. While prices of diamonds go down as the colors go down from D to Z, after Z, the diamonds start to become so saturated with a yellow color that they’re no longer considered tinted colorless diamonds, they become fancy color diamonds - prized for their beautiful yellow hue.

This yellow color in the diamonds comes from the presence of nitrogen in the crystals. The nitrogen molecules absorb blue light, leaving the stone with a yellow shade. The more nitrogen present in the diamond, the more intense the yellow color will be. Like most fancy color diamonds, yellow diamonds are often found with secondary modifying colors. These can have an enormous effect on the price of the diamond. For example, brownish yellow diamonds are much cheaper than pure yellows, and orangy yellows can be worth even more than straight fancy yellow diamonds.

One confusing issue with fancy yellow diamonds is the term “Canary Diamonds”. Diamond shoppers are often confused by the multiple terms. But the simple answer is that Canary is just another way to say fancy yellow diamonds. The term canary doesn’t carry any special meaning.

Like other fancy colors, the color scale for fancy yellow diamonds is as follows: Fancy light, fancy, fancy intense, and fancy vivid yellow. There are also two parallel grades near the top: fancy deep and fancy dark yellow. As with colorless diamonds (and perhaps even more so with fancy color diamonds), it is critical to buy a diamond with a reliable GIA certificate. The reason is simply that prices jump precipitously between the fancy color grades, so you want to make sure that what you’re buying is truly what the certificate says it is.

Unlike the more exotic fancy colors like pink and blue, yellow diamonds are fairly common, so if you can afford a decent quality colorless diamond, you can probably also afford a fancy yellow diamond. Of course, a super high end vivid yellow will be much more than even a high end colorless stone, but this brings us to probably the most important tip regarding yellow diamonds.

You need to get a fancy yellow diamond set by a jeweler with an expertise in setting these types of diamonds. We have always been very big fans of Leibish & Co. They’re one of the top experts in the world when it comes to fancy color diamonds.

But why does it matter so much? Well, even with a regular fancy yellow diamond or even a fancy light yellow diamond, you can still get a tremendous amount of yellow color as long as the diamond is set correctly. How is this accomplished? An expert jeweler will make a basket that holds the diamond out of the brightest yellow gold possible so that the color is absorbed into the diamond. This way, you can get a relatively cheap fancy light yellow and still have a finished ring with a deeply saturated yellow color in the stone.

Here are some great examples. Take a look first at this stunning fancy vivid yellow diamond. It’s a 2.25 carat VS2 clarity vivid yellow radiant. It’s truly an amazing gem. Now look at these beautiful pieces of jewelry - each set with fancy light yellow diamonds.

It’s hard to believe these diamonds are only graded fancy light yellow - but that’s the beauty of a properly set yellow diamond. So if you’re looking to get a yellow diamond - you’re best off with Leibish & Co. We’ll include a link in the description.
