After Prophet Muhammad’s death, the Muslim world faced a simple but crucial question: “Who will become the leader of the Muslim community?” Some people argued that Ali, the Prophet’s cousin, should take the lead. Others believed Abu Bakr, the Prophet’s closest friend, was the right choice. This one question has fueled a debate for over 1,400 years. Shias hold that the leader must come directly from the Prophet’s family, while Sunnis believe the leader should be chosen from the wider Muslim community.

Today, the global Muslim population of about 2 billion splits roughly into 90% Sunnis and 10% Shias. Among 49 Muslim-majority countries, only four, Iran, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, and Iraq, are dominated by Shia communities; Sunnis lead the rest.
