Just before they fly out to USA where they will perform at the 2024 International Double Reed Society’s annual convention in Flagstaff, Arizona the Lonarc Oboe Trio and Lonarc Double Reed Quartet musicians sit down with the oboist and composer Edwin Roxburgh to discuss the music they will play:
Shadow-Play (1984) for Oboe Trio composed by Edwin Roxburgh (b. 1937)
Quartetto Concertante in Bb maj
composed by Johann Went (1745-1801) c. 1785-95 in Vienna

Here follows a review of the concerts we gave at IDRS24 by Dr Stephen Caplan DMA, Professor of Oboe, University of Nevada Las Vegas. Principal Oboe, Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra

"The Lonarc Oboe Trio presented two captivating performances at this summer’s International Double Reed Society conference in Flagstaff, Arizona.

I first heard them on Wednesday evening at the Chamber Music Gala, which opened with an elegant performance of a Baroque sonata by three musicians playing bassoon, cello and harpsichord.

Edwin Roxburgh’s Shadow-Play, composed 250 years later, provided a stark contrast, boldly projecting sonic landscapes completely foreign to the world of the Baroque.

Opening with all three musicians playing double trills, this terrific composition explores the full range of the instruments and uses a variety of extended techniques, especially multi-phonics.

It turns out that when it comes to multi-phonics, three players are better than one!
Roxburgh masterfully exploits multi-phonic sounds to create textural variation and to more clearly delineate the shifting harmonic structure.

The Lonarc Oboe Trio gave a nuanced performance that was expressive and engaging.

The large audience of supportive double reed players responded to this finely crafted presentation with a thunderous ovation.

The next day, they performed the US première of Johann Went’s Quartetto Concertante in Bb maj, a work they have researched, edited and brought back to life from its 18th century origins.

The Lonarc Oboe Trio were joined by bassoonist Michael Elderkin. The part originally scored for oboe grande in G was played by Adrian Rowlands on an oboe d’amore, and Joseph Sanders was in full command playing oboe with able support from Judy Proctor on cor anglais.

The delightful final movement of Went’s work was a set of variations that showcased the singular skills of each instrumentalist.

Throughout the performance, the Lonarc musicians played with the refinement of a great string quartet.

Beautiful blend, precise articulations and a large dynamic range all contributed to fully projecting the overall musical design of Went’s appealing score.

I am grateful to the Lonarc Oboe Trio for travelling to the USA and sharing fascinating repertoire and first class musicianship with the IDRS membership."
