On a wind swept hilltop is a curious, abandoned, unfinished structure, which is located on the probable site of Gibeah of Saul. The hill is one of four major ancient cities which overlooked and controlled the tribal allotment of Benjamin, and the Benjamin Plateau, which is sandwiched between Ephraim and Judah, and guards the approach to Jerusalem. The road systems for travel in all four cardinal directions made for military and political importance, and continues even today. The biblical text gives precise detail on this tribal allotment (Josh 18:11-28) and the geography remains relevant in modern days as well.

The road systems both ancient and modern follow the ridges and valleys, providing access from Jericho to the Mediterranean (E/West Access) as well as N/South through the Hill Country spine of Eretz Israel.

Stay tuned for my upcoming instalment regarding Nebi Samuel (Tomb of the Prophet Samuel). It's a possible site of the high place of Gibeon, where David visited the Tabernacle (1 Chr 16:39) and Solomon sacrificed, just before the Temple was constructed (2 Chr 1:3-6). The hill is considered one of the important features of the Benjamin Plateau.
