This is the only authenticated photograph of Billy the Kid—and it's been misunderstood for over 140 years. The famous tintype, taken in Fort Sumner, New Mexico around 1880, created the myth that Billy was left-handed. But tintypes are mirror images. In 2011, this 2x3 inch ferrotype sold for $2.3 million—the most expensive 19th-century photograph ever sold. Billy gave it to his friend Dan Dedrick, and it remained in the Dedrick-Upham family for over 100 years before being authenticated and auctioned.
