The Supreme Court of India has ruled that clearing the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is mandatory for both new teacher appointments and promotions for in-service teachers. This ruling applies even to those already employed and must be completed within two years if they have more than five years of service left. Those with less than five years remaining may continue without qualifying but cannot be promoted unless they pass the exam.
