What is the difference between Cartier Santos Carrée automatic and Cartier Santos Galbee - explained

Описание к видео What is the difference between Cartier Santos Carrée automatic and Cartier Santos Galbee - explained

The Cartier Santos Carrée is often wrongly referred to as the Galbée. A lot of people wonder what is what, and how to tell them apart. In this video I explain which is which, and how you can determine that for yourself.

The Cartier Santos Carrée automatic is the original, launched in 1978. It became an instant hit, and in 1987 the Galbée was launched. Carrée is French for “square” or “squarish”, and also “straight”, which is a simple way to describe the form of this watch. It has a squarish design, and straight lines.

The Galbée on the other hand has more curvature to it. And as such the name is not very surprising, as Galbée literally means “curved” and “curvy” in French. The straight and blocky lines of the Carrée have been abandoned for a more smoothed down one-line case design (especially noticeable when looked from the side).

In this video I’ll go more into detail on the differences.

The watches in this video are a 1984 Cartier Santos Carrée automatic two-tone ref 1172961 (2961) in steel and 18k gold, and a Cartier Santos Galbée quartz ref 987901 from ca 1990.
