Besides what to purchase and from where, the most common question is whether to stack or collect numismatics. My strategy is to do both because diversification is a good thing. Stack the spot price curves, remembering to stack less when spot prices and premiums are higher, and stacking more when spot drops significantly. Selectively collect numismatic price curves, remembering to collect wisely, focusing on coins that remain popular with collectors over the long term. The spot and numismatic price curves can diverge and compliment each other when properly mixed to maintain a more stable average overall value over the long haul. Spot prices and premiums swing a lot; numismatic curves less so. When one curve is down another is up or flat and vice versa. My overall stack/collection value remains fairly stable over the long-term, usually growing slowly and steadily year-over-year. Maintain a significant cash reserve; whenever spot falls hard remember to load up. Slow down when spot and/or premiums are historically high, and focus instead on numismatics. Keep an eye open for new numismatic opportunities and longer term trends, but stay focused on collectable coins with longstanding popularity over the decades.
