WHAT IS YOUR FAV PLACE IN WEST BENGAL?
In 1947, India gained independence from British rule, and British India was divided into India and Pakistan.
East Bengal, which had a Muslim majority, became a part of Pakistan, while West Bengal, which had a Hindu majority, became a part of India.
The Bengali language, which had been banned by the British during colonial rule, became the official language of East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) and West Bengal.
In 1971, East Pakistan declared independence from Pakistan and became the country of Bangladesh after a nine-month-long war with Pakistan.
This war was one of the deadliest conflicts of the 20th century, with estimates of the death toll ranging from 300,000 to 3 million people.
Despite the political division between West Bengal and Bangladesh, the two regions share many cultural and linguistic ties, and there is a vibrant exchange of ideas, music, and art between the two.
