I recall an excellent statement made by Mark Twain. He said, buy land, they're not making it anymore. Which is so true and land is never increasing, right! Equal truth is, land asset never depreciates, because it has an infinite usefulness. But for millions of years’ land wasn’t valued the way it is valued now. During the prehistoric era which is from 2.5 million years ago to 1,200 B.C, human beings lived in caves and wandered around in small groups. It was in the early agricultural societies nearly 8,000-10,000 years ago, that human beings started using iron tools in agriculture & got settled in a sedentary lifestyle. That’s when human beings developed a much closer tie with land and the notion of land ownership started evolving.
Since then, many thousand years and civilizations have passed and the land right has undergone several changes from being community ownership to private ownership. We had a permanent settlement introduced by Lord Cornwallis that dramatically changed the socio-political dynamics of the entire region to date. This episode will highlight the impacts of permanent settlement.
