On 25 April 2006, Kathmandu became the centre of mass demonstrations during Nepal’s People’s Movement. After weeks of nationwide strikes and protests against King Gyanendra’s direct rule, the king announced that the dissolved parliament would be reinstated. This marked a turning point in the struggle that soon brought an end to centuries of monarchy and opened the path to a federal democratic republic.

Channel 4’s Ian Williams captured scenes from the rally, which was part victory parade and part continued protest, as many celebrated the concession while others pressed for the king to step down.
