Did Tolkien, Jackson and Mercer RUIN TTRPGs? - With Dr. Tom Thompson

The tabletop rpg multiverse sure changed a lot in the last 50 years, with branches scooting off in all directions. Starting from what was essentially filler material for wargaming campaigns, commercial TTRPGs these days probably hit every genre and direction under the sun, and possibly a few where the sun don't shine.

These things don't just grow in isolation though, and cultural phenomena like Lord of The Rings - first the books, then the movies - and Critical Role, along with a few more localized but significant variables like the industrialization of Fantasy and Sci-fi literature from TSR, Wizards and Games Workshop changed both people's expectations of how these games should look and feel, and how to interact with them.

Join me and resident historian Dr. Tom Thompson as we try to untangle a brief history of the evolution of ttrpgs, and drop your thoughts in the chat!
