In today's video, I give you the reason why 1 hand form shooting SUCKS! These simple shooting mistakes can really hinder basketball players ability to really score the basketball. By making sure you are avoiding these killer shooting mistakes you are automatically going to give yourself a better opportunity to increase your overall shooting percentage. By implementing these tips into your game you can almost immediately skyrocket your shooting and your basketball shooting range!
In basketball, one hand form shooting is a staple for many players and coaches. The biggest misconception with one hand form shooting is that it will optimize your shooting mechanics, in reality, one hand form shooting often times has the reverse effect. With the ball reaching a player's set point while their legs are still loaded this is a huge issue because over the years we've seen that players with a two motion or segmented shot really struggle to shoot the basketball at a high percentage. However, the players with a more fluid one motion shot are usually the much better shooters. Think of all of the top shooters in the NBA guys like Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson they are both super fluid when they shoot the ball with ZERO segmentation on their shot. My first tip is one that I tell all my players that are serious about taking their scoring and shooting to the next level, and that is "load the ball lower". Yes, this seems to contradict most traditional shooting instruction, but if we dive into the best shooters in the NBA we notice that all of the elite shooters load the ball lower by their waist or thigh. The common misconception is that it will actually make your shot slower, but in reality, guys like Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard are two of the most elite shooters in the NBA and get their shot off basically whenever they want to. Both of them load the ball lower. So the biggest thing when practicing form shooting that most players need to focus on is to not set the ball on the shelf. This is something that kills players shooting because of a lack of fluidity and power.
My second pro-tip when it come to avoiding these scoring mistakes to always make sure you are form shooting with both hands making it a two-hand form shot! By practicing form shooting the same way you usually shoot the ball you will see much more dramatic result simply because you aren't segmenting your shot and you are shooting how you typically would with a one-motion fluid shot. If you are using form shooting to dial in something with your release I recommend just dropping your guide hand off the ball after you reach your set point. This is a great way to work on your follow-through without sacrificing your other mechanics on your jump shot. Think of the great shooters in the NBA guys like James Harden and Kevin Durant. The number one reason why they rarely miss short is that they are experts at making sure there is zero loss of power when they shoot keeping everything extremely fluid. You will never see players at the top level shoot the ball in a segmented fashion on purpose.
Overall I think basketball form shooting can be a good thing it's just modifying the drill to really get the most benefit from it. Confidence is something we see in ALL of the great shooter's the best way to make sure you are a confident shooter is to make sure your shotmechanics are dialed in! So there is the reason why 1 hand form shooting sucks, avoid these killer shooting mistakes, and I promise you will become a lights out shooter in no time!
