Following the success of the 6120 Country Gentleman, Gretsch introduced the 6119 Tennessean in 1958 as a slightly smaller version of the G6120 with one pickup. In 1961 the model was slightly modified; the single cutaway remained, but the guitar received a second pickup and a slightly thinner body. In addition to the Country Gentleman, this 6119 was extremely popular due to its association with Chet Atkins and George Harrison, the latter of whom was often seen playing his Tennessean..

Chet Atkins had indicated to Gretsch that measures were needed to reduce feedback from the hollowbody models. Gretsch responded to this with the Electrotone body; By providing the thinner body with sturdy 'trestle' bracing and sealing the body by omitting the f-holes, feedback on stage was reduced to a minimum. For appearance's sake, the f-holes were painted on the body.

This 1967 Gretsch Tennessean is a real player in terms of appearance! The Cherry Red finish has faded over the years in the sunlight this guitar has received, but the original color is still faintly visible where the pickguard should be. The guitar has clearly been played well in its musical life, with playwear on the body and hardware, but if we can all age in such a cool way as this Gretsch, there is little to complain about!
