In this, our second Tomser Cat Storytelling book review, Mark Dorey, children's author, publisher and storyteller, together with his daughters, Seren and Catrin, give their thoughts on the classic children's books by CS Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia, which comprise all seven of the Narnia books: The Magician’s Nephew, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian - The Return to Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and finally, The Last Battle.
We read this book as a family during the COVID19 lockdown! The Chronicles of Narnia are a series of exciting adventures starting right from the creation of Narnia by Aslan, until the very end of Narnia, although the books were not written in the order that they should be read. Below is the order that they were written:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
The Silver Chair (1953)
The Horse and His Boy (1954)
The Magician’s Nephew (1955)
The Last Battle (1956)
In 1957, an 11-year-old boy named Lawrence Krieg was preparing to read the Narnia books for a second time. Lawrence wondered if he should re-read them chronologically, but his mother felt he should stick with the original published order. So, Lawrence wrote a letter to CS Lewis and received the following response:
“I think I agree with your order for reading the books more than with your mother’s. The series was not planned beforehand as she thinks. When I wrote The Lion I did not know I was going to write any more. Then I wrote P. Caspian as a sequel and still didn’t think there would be any more, and when I had done The Voyage I felt quite sure it would be the last. But I found as I was wrong. So perhaps it does not matter very much in which order anyone read them.”
C. S. Lewis, 23/4/57
